About Gurdwara Sri Patti Sahib
Gurdwara Sri Patti Sahib, also known as Gurdwara Maulvi Patti Sahib, holds deep spiritual and educational significance in the early life of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. Located just a short walk—barely 100 meters—from Gurdwara Janam Asthaan, this sacred site marks the place where the young Guru received his early education. It lies nestled between Gurdwara Janam Asthaan and Gurdwara Bal Lila Sahib, forming part of the spiritual nucleus of Nankana Sahib, Pakistan.
The word ‘Patti’ refers to a traditional wooden tablet used by children in earlier times to learn writing. The tablet could be coated with soft clay and reused after each lesson. It was here, at this very location, that Guru Nanak Dev Ji began his education, learning multiple languages including Punjabi, Sanskrit, Arabic, and Persian, which were widely used across Punjab during that era.
A Center of Early Enlightenment
As a child, Guru Nanak first studied Punjabi under Pandit Gopal, followed by Sanskrit with Pandit Brij Lal, and eventually Persian with Maulvi Kutab Ud Din by the age of 13. His exceptional intellect and divine wisdom were evident from a very young age. At the mere age of seven, he astonished his teachers by offering profound spiritual explanations of worldly and divine truths, well beyond his years.
One day, when young Nanak remained silent in class and did not engage with his assignments, his teacher questioned him. Guru Nanak’s response was so spiritually deep and enlightening that the teacher, Pandit Gopal, advised Nanak’s father Mehta Kalu to send his son to more advanced scholars—realizing the child’s divine nature and unique intellect.
Guru Nanak’s Divine Teachings through Letters
One of the most remarkable aspects of Gurdwara Patti Sahib is its association with Guru Nanak’s composition known as “Patti”—a spiritual acrostic based on the Punjabi alphabet. In this hymn, Guru Nanak provides a divinely inspired interpretation of each letter, offering a deeper understanding of life, God, and human existence. His verses reflect a message of unity, devotion, love for the Creator, and spiritual wisdom.
The hymn begins with:
ਸਸੇ ਸੋਈ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸਬਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਭਇਆ ।
He who created all existence is the One Lord of all.
ਸੇਵਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਸਫਲੁ ਭਇਆ ।
Those who serve Him with devotion—blessed and fruitful is their life on earth.
A Symbol of Light and Education
Gurdwara Sri Patti Sahib is more than just a place of learning—it symbolizes the awakening of the soul, the light of education, and the power of divine wisdom. It is at this very place that Guru Nanak Dev Ji challenged the conventional teachings of his time and introduced the concept of Oneness of God in front of the very Pandits and Maulvis who once tutored him.
Today, this revered Gurdwara stands as a powerful representation of spiritual education, humility, and enlightenment. To further honor the legacy of Guru Nanak’s contribution to education and mankind, Baba Guru Nanak University is now being developed in the vicinity, establishing Nankana Sahib not only as a holy pilgrimage site but also a global center for learning and harmony.
