About Gurdwara Sri Tambu Sahib Jee
Just half a kilometer from Gurdwara Janam Asthaan, nestled under the shade of a miraculous tree, lies Gurdwara Sri Tambu Sahib Jee, a place deeply connected to the early spiritual journey of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The word “Tambu” means tent—and the name of this shrine commemorates a miraculous event where a tree bent low to provide shelter to the young Guru, forming a natural canopy like a tent.
This sacred site stands as a living symbol of compassion, selfless service, and divine grace, where nature itself responded to the spiritual power of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
The Journey of True Business – “Sacha Sauda”
As Guru Nanak entered early adulthood, his father, Mehta Kalu Jee, encouraged him to engage in worldly affairs and try his hand at business. With a hopeful heart, he handed twenty rupees to his son and asked him to travel to Mandi Choorkana (present-day Farooqabad), about 40 kilometers from Nankana Sahib, to make a profitable trade.
But divine souls walk a different path.
On his way, just 2 kilometers from Mandi, near a place now known as Gurdwara Sacha Sauda, Guru Nanak encountered a group of hungry sadhus. Their suffering stirred his heart. Rather than pursuing a worldly trade, Guru Nanak used the money to buy food and serve langar (free community meal) to the hungry—performing what he later called the “True Trade” (Sacha Sauda).
The Shelter Under the Mal Tree
After giving away all the money in service to others, Guru Nanak was filled with inner joy—but aware that his father might be displeased with his actions. On his return journey, he stopped at a spot under a Mal tree (also called jal or van), where he sought shelter and solace. The tree, in a miraculous act of reverence, is said to have bowed its branches down to form a natural tent—and this is why the site is revered today as Gurdwara Sri Tambu Sahib Jee.
Bhai Mardana, Guru Nanak’s lifelong companion, informed Mehta Kalu Jee about the “loss” of the money. Deeply concerned, his father arrived at the spot, visibly upset. Soon after, Bebe Nanaki Ji, Guru Nanak’s elder sister and his first devotee, also came to the scene. Her loving presence and gentle words calmed their father’s anger. She reminded him that what Nanak did was not a loss—but a divine act of compassion.
Rai Bular’s Divine Recognition and Generous Donation
Among those who witnessed the event was Rai Bular, the local ruler and a noble-hearted admirer of young Nanak. Seeing Guru Nanak’s spiritual light and divine character, he intervened and humbly said to Mehta Kalu Jee:
“Patwari Ji! Lest you chide the boy, let me remind you—this entire town is graced by his presence. This is not a loss, it is a blessing.”
So moved was Rai Bular by the young Guru’s actions that he donated 750 Murabbas (18,750 acres) of land—half of his total holdings—as a mark of respect and reverence. This profound moment of generosity and realization added to the sacredness of the site.
Present-Day Significance
Today, Gurdwara Sri Tambu Sahib Jee continues to inspire pilgrims with the story of true selflessness and service. A new, sublime Gurdwara complex is under construction, set to be inaugurated by Gurpurab 2024, offering pilgrims a more beautiful and comfortable space for prayer and reflection.
This sacred site not only reminds us of the Guru’s message of “Vand Chhako” (share with others), but also of the miracles that unfold when one walks the path of truth, humility, and love for humanity.
